Staying Fit This AutumnEach spring, your fear of swimsuit season keeps you motivated to stay fit. With summer comes swimming, kayaking, surfing, hiking, tennis and beach volleyball– you exercise almost every day without realizing it because it doesn’t feel like work. With winter your new year’s resolution gets you to the gym– at least for a week or two.

Yet what about autumn time?

As you watch leaves fall from trees, it’s easy to fall behind with exercise, too. Bikini days at the beach are a distant memory, and instead of splashing in the waves you’re splashing your boots in puddles. So how do you force yourself away from the fireplace and into fitness? Here are Five Tips To Stay Fit This Autumn:

1. Take advantage of the weather.

Temperature drops and early sunsets might seem like good reasons to stay on the sofa, but they’re not; there’s nothing you can do in July that you can’t in October, as long as you have the proper gear. In fact, many activities become more pleasant in the cooler months. The crisp air that welcomes fall will keep your body temperature down while you break a sweat, so you’ll stay cooler longer while running, playing tennis or hiking. You can continue other activities, too: if you took up swimming this past summer, find a great indoor pool. If you want to keep surfing, invest in a winter wetsuit. There’s no reason to stop participating in the activities you enjoy just because the days are shorter.

2. Join a gym.

If heading outside after the temperature dips doesn’t appeal to you, you can take the more traditional route and join a gym. The scenery on the stationary bike may not compare to a beautiful local park, but there are other advantages: you can’t read a magazine or watch the latest episode of The Walking Dead while biking outdoors, for example. The free weights and weight machines available at the gym will help you get a great full-body workout, and if tennis is your thing, you might consider switching to squash– most gyms have courts and rackets available for rent.

3. Try something new.

For kids and parents, September marks the beginning of the new year. It’s also marks the beginning of extra-curricular activities — think tap dancing, karate, boxing, ballet and rock-climbing. Most of these programs offer adult classes too, so if you’ve been meaning to learn how to do jazz hands or perfect the summersault, fall is the ideal time to pick up a new skill.

Workout At Home4. Work out at home.

It’s easy to set up a small home gym with a few pieces of equipment. Any combination of an exercise mat, a stability ball, a chin-up bar, dumbbells, exercise bands, and a medicine ball is a great start. And if new season of 30 Rock or Dexter has got you hooked, this is a great way to keep fit without having to TiVo the latest episode and risk seeing spoilers on Facebook.

5. Enjoy fall foods.

A huge part of feeling great is eating right, and there are plenty of fall-friendly meals to make this a time to look forward to. It’s apple season, and there’s no shortage of healthy meals and desserts lauding them as the main ingredient– bonus if there’s an orchard nearby and you can pick them yourself. There’s also pumpkins (and pumpkin seeds!), pears, parsnips, sweet potatoes, beets, carrots, turnips– anything you’d need to make a healthy stew, salad or casserole. It’s so much easier to work out knowing you’ve got a delicious, healthful meal waiting at home.
